Last weekend the debate team participated in the 2016 Gig Harbor Invitational, with success at both the novice and varsity levels. I’m delighted to say that Quan and Sara not only broke to the outrounds, but ended up winning the entire novice division of the tournament! I had the great pleasure of watching their Finals round against Interlake, and was deeply impressed. Garfield novice have now won three tournaments in a row – and we have only taken them to three tournaments!!! We are so excited by how well they are doing. A big thanks to all of our varsity members, who did an incredible job mentoring Quan and Sara throughout the tournament.

We also had a lot of success at the varsity level. Three of the four teams that broke to semi-finals were Garfield teams – Griffin/Carter, Luke/Hannah, and Mabel/Aisley. Griffin and Carter advanced to the Finals round, where they just barely lost out to Ingraham in a 2-1 decision. Despite the disappointment of losing, they acquired Garfield’s first bid to the 2016-2017 Washington State Speech and Debate Championship Tournament. Congratulations Griffin and Carter!

Several varsity debaters were also some of the top speakers at the tournament – Griffin was 3rd speaker, Carter was 4th speaker, Luke was 5th speaker, Hannah was 6th speaker, and Mabel was 7th speaker. Not bad!

The 3rd year debaters now have their eyes set on a very competitive tournament in Chicago, while the 2nd years and novice travel to Tahoma.
